You might see “Imports” on our sign, but if you live in Whatcom County, you know that Jeeps are practically a native species here. From the daily commute down I-5 to the weekend trails near Mt. Baker, your rig takes a beating in the Pacific Northwest.

At Bruce Cox Imports, we have been servicing Bellingham since 1995. Over those three decades, we’ve learned that Jeep owners are a unique breed. You love your vehicle, but you also know the specific headaches that come with it.

You don’t need to wait weeks for a dealership appointment to get expert care. We provide dealership-level diagnostics with the personal touch of a local, family-owned shop.

What is the Jeep “Death Wobble”?

The “Death Wobble” is a violent shaking of the steering wheel and front suspension, typically occurring at speeds over 45 mph after hitting a bump. It is most common in solid-axle vehicles like the Wrangler and Gladiator and is usually caused by loose or worn suspension components—specifically the track bar, ball joints, or tie rod ends.

Common Jeep Issues We Solve

General mechanics change parts; Jeep experts solve problems. Our ASE-certified technicians are well-versed in the specific quirks of the Wrangler (JK/JL), Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Gladiator.

1. Fixing the Death Wobble (Permanently)

If you’ve experienced it, you never forget it.

  • The Cause: In Bellingham, our wet roads and potholes accelerate wear on your suspension. The track bar is the most common culprit, but worn ball joints and control arm bushings often contribute.

  • Our Fix: We don’t just slap on a new steering stabilizer (which is just a band-aid). We perform a full suspension “shake down” to identify exactly which joint is loose, ensuring a safe, permanent fix.

2. TIPM & Electrical Gremlins

Is your horn honking at random? Do your door locks work only when they feel like it? Is your fuel pump failing to turn on?

  • The Cause: This is often the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), a known weak point in many 2007–2015 Jeep models. Moisture intrusion—a constant threat here in the PNW—can corrode these internal connections.

  • Our Fix: We have the advanced diagnostic tools to trace electrical faults to the source, repairing or replacing the module without the guesswork.

3. Overheating & Radiator Leaks

Jeep engines (especially the 3.6L Pentastar and older 4.0L) run hot. If you are towing a boat to Lake Whatcom or crawling up a forest service road, your cooling system is under immense pressure.

  • Our Fix: We check for common leak points in the radiator seams and thermostat housings to keep your engine running cool, preventing catastrophic head gasket failure.
